Welcome to margaretslovak.com! The musical and artistic creations of Margaret Slovak are contained within to bring you comfort, peace, and inspiration.
Greetings, Everyone! I am happy to share the news that I am finally entering the wonderful world of VINYL! In late August, I am releasing my New York City quartet album, For the Moment, on vinyl. This album was recorded in NYC in 1989, during my first stint there; it was released on CD in 2007. For the Moment contains eight of my original compositions, and features myself on electric guitar, along with three amazing NYC musicians: pianist Fred Hersch, bassist Michael Formanek and drummer Michael Sarin. The vinyl records will be available on August 26th, 2026 at my vinyl release shows and also from Waterloo Records, my website and Bandcamp.
To celebrate the vinyl release, I am playing two shows in Austin, TX in late August with my Texas quartet! For these shows, I am honored to be joined by three stellar Austin musicians: pianist Terry Bowness, bassist Chris Maresh and drummer Masumi Jones. We will launch the vinyl version of For the Moment with a live in-store performance and album signing at WATERLOO RECORDS on WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 26th at 5:30 PM; this event is free and open to all ages. Waterloo Records is located at 1105 North Lamar, Austin, TX. For more information about this in-store show, visit www.waterloorecords.com or call 512-474-2500.
The Margaret Slovak Quartet will also perform a full-length concert at MONKS JAZZ CLUB in Austin on SUNDAY, AUGUST 30th at 7:30 PM. Monks Jazz Club is located at 310 E. St. Elmo Road, in the St. Elmo Arts District in South Austin. Advance tickets are $20-$30 and are available from https://tickets.monksjazz.com/shows/12527/2026-08-30.
2025:
On November 30, 2025, I released a digital-only single as an accompaniment to the duo Christmas album that bassist Chris Maresh and I released in November, 2024, entitled A Star's Light Does Fall. This single is our arrangement of “A Child Is Born,” a beautiful song composed in 1969 by trumpeter Thad Jones Here are some streaming links to the single below. You can also purchase a digital download of it from the “buy” tab below or from the “store” section.
2024:
On November 1, 2024, I released my 5th CD, entitled “A Star's Light Does Fall.” It is a duo album with the amazing Austin bassist Chris Maresh; we recorded 11 of our unique instrumental interpretations of classic and non-traditional Christmas songs, including the traditional carol “O Come O Come Emmanuel” and “Infant Eyes” by Wayne Shorter. Our goal was to record music that could bring comfort and peace to people during the holiday season, especially those facing life and health challenges or grieving the recent loss of a loved one. Chris and I performed many live shows in Austin in November and December, 2024 to celebrate the release. We will play more Xmas shows in December, 2025! The physical CD is available here for purchase (see the “store” tab), as well as at Waterloo Records in Austin; it is also available on all major digital streaming platforms.
Some other good news to share: I am very honored that one of my songs from my New Wings CD, "Jesse's Heart," was used in a beautiful 2024 documentary film by Anna Sofaer, founder of the Solstice Project. The film, "Written on the Landscape," is the 3rd in a trilogy by Ms. Sofaer about Chaco Canyon in New Mexico, the mysterious sacred site of ancestral Puebloan culture. In addition to a sold-out celebratory screening on Saturday June 8, 2024 at The Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA) in Santa Fe, NM, there were numerous public screenings at CCA in June, 2024, as well as film screenings in Durango, CO and Albuquerque, NM. I was honored to perform a solo guitar show at a celebratory reception following the 6/8/24 screening in Santa Fe at CCA.
