Guitarist Margaret Slovak and bassist Chris Maresh, both from Austin, go deep on this recording. Their musical mission is anchored in space, intimacy, reflection. Margaret and Chris interpret classic carols such as “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” and “Away In a Manger.” But there’s room for Wayne Shorter and Leonard Cohen on the album, too. Margaret's second CD features 11 of her solo and duo pieces, along with a jazz ballad (In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning) and a song by Brazilian musician Egberto Gismonti (Memoria E Fado). The 8 duets pair Margaret's nylon-string and electric guitar with bassist Dave Captein, steel-string guitarist Doug Smith and pianist George Mitchell.
Margaret's first CD, a beautiful solo guitar recording featuring twelve of Margaret's original jazz/classical pieces, plus her interpretations of a jazz ballad by Miles Davis & Bill Evans, "Blue in Green" and a bossa nova by Luis Bonfa, "Manha de Carnaval".
This digital-only single release is an accompaniment to the duo Christmas album that guitarist Margaret Slovak and bassist Chris Maresh released in November, 2024, entitled "A Star's Light Does Fall." This single is their instrumental jazz arrangement of this beautiful song written by Thad Jones in 1969 for the Mel Lewis Orchestra.
